FBI Crime Index Offenses
The University of California's FBI Part I Crime Offenses in total, decreased by 3% for 2015. Violent crime increased by 1%. Property crime decreased by 3%. Property crime offenses represented 95% of the 4,857 cases using the FBI reporting criteria contained in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program to determine the University of California's 2015 reportable crimes.
Valid assessments are possible only with careful study and analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction. The reader is, therefore, cautioned against comparing statistical data of individual reporting units from cities, metropolitan areas or universities solely on the basis of their population coverage or student enrollment.
There were 259 reports of violent crimes in 2015, compared to 256 in 2014.
- zero homicides – same as reported in 2014
- 91 rapes – 39 more than reported in 2014, a 75% increase
- 14 attempted rapes - 3 more than 2014, a 27% increase
- 45 robberies – 14 less than in 2014, a 24% decrease
- 109 aggravated assaults - 25 more than 2014, a 19% increase
There were 4,598 property crimes reported in 2015, a decrease of 3% compared to 2014.
- Burglary - decreased 19%
- Larceny/theft - decreased 1%
- Motor vehicle theft - no change
- Arson - decreased 6%
The University of California Police Department is reporting other offenses based upon defined criteria derived from the FBI Part II definitions. Based on the different criteria for identifying and collecting the data, some of the headings for “Other Offenses” in the versions of the Annual Report prior to 2006 do not lend themselves to comparison with data collected in this edition of the Annual Report.
The number of Systemwide reported instances of Simple Assault cases was 535 in 2015 while the University reported 610 cases in 2014.
Forgery & Counterfeiting
The number of Systemwide reported instances of Forgery & Counterfeiting cases was 89 in 2015 while the University reported 138 cases in 2014.
The number of 2015 Systemwide reported cases for Fraud was 286. In 2014, the University reported 200 cases.
The number of reported embezzlement cases in 2015 was 13. In 2014, there were 12 reports.
Stolen Property, Receiving, Possessing
The number of reported offenses related for buying, receiving and/or possessing stolen property in 2015 was 79. In 2014, this category had 95 cases.
In 2015, the number of vandalism cases was 925 compared to 1,015 in 2014.
Weapons Offenses – Firearms: In 2015, the number of reported firearms offenses was six compared to eight in 2014.
Weapons Offenses – All Others: In 2015, the number of weapons offenses – all other, was 79 compared to 90 in 2014. Overall, Weapons offenses decreased 12% from 98 in 2014 to 85 in 2015.
Overall, Weapons offenses decreased 7% from 107 in 2014 to 100 in 2014.
The number of reported Sex Offenses in 2015 was 90 compared to 122 in 2014.
Drug Abuse Violations
In 2015, there were 386 drug abuse violations. In 2014, there were 650 violations reported. This represents a decrease of 41%.
In 2015 as well as 2014, there were no gambling offenses reported.
DUI (Alcohol & Drugs)
In 2015, there were 274 reported DUI cases compared to 414 in 2014. This represents a 34% decrease.
The number of liquor law violations reported in 2015 was 517. In 2014, there were 693 offenses reported. This represents a 25% decrease in reported offenses.
The number of drunkenness offenses in 2015 was 715. In 2014, the University reported 741 drunkenness cases. This represents a 4% decrease.
In 2015, there were 291 disorderly conduct cases. In 2014, the University reported 260 incidents. This data includes other offenses surrounding breaches of the peace.
All Other UCR
Overall, in 2015 there were 2,431 All Other UCR 26 Offenses reported. Further, the following five categories were identified in order to highlight offenses reported within All Other Offenses.
All Other Offenses - Bomb Actual: The number of reported actual bomb offenses remained the same at zero cases reported in 2015 and 2014.
All Other Offenses - Bomb Threat: The number of reported bomb threats was two reported in 2015, following three reported in 2014.
All Other Offenses - Trespass Demo: Incidents of trespassing related to campus demonstrations and protests increased from 20 in 2014 to 39 reported in 2015.
All Other Offenses - Trespass Other: Other types of trespassing showed a 17% increase from 106 in 2014 to 124 in 2015.
The clearance rate for FBI Part I Offenses in 2015 was 10%.
- 37% of reported violent crimes were cleared in 2015.
- 8% of property offenses were cleared in 2015.
The clearance rate for Part II Offenses was 68% in 2015.
University of California Police Officers arrested 5,046 persons in 2015. Of those arrested, 4,049 were not affiliated with the University. Of those total persons arrested in 2015, 87 persons were arrested for Part I violent offenses, 308 for Part I property crimes, 3,879 for Part II offenses and 765 persons were arrested for warrants or non-Part I/II crimes.
Stolen and Recovered Property
Property reported stolen to the University of California Police in 2015 totaled $4,005,002. Total property recovered was valued at $634,198 for a 16% recovery rate.
