Message from the Coordinator
On behalf of the University of California Police Department and the ten campus Police Chiefs, it is my pleasure to share the 2015 University of California Police Department (UCPD) system-wide Annual Report & Crime Statistics.
The University of California Police Department is committed to keeping our campuses safe places for you to study, live, work and visit and we take pride in building effective problem-solving partnerships to enhance the safety and livability of the campus community for our students, patients, faculty, staff and visitors.
The University of California Police Department's mission is to protect life and property and we are committed to upholding the Constitutional Rights of all persons, abiding by and enforcing State and Federal law and doing so consistent with the values of the University of California community and the principles of community policing.
UCPD Officers are duly sworn peace officers with statewide authority as defined in California Penal Code Section 830.2 (b). Each campus police organization also employs civilian staff and students/interns who perform specialized public safety support functions. The services and challenges of the ten campus police departments are as varied as the campuses they serve. By designing public safety strategies and programs tailored to the individual campus community, each campus police agency provides the best combination of resources and services to meet its unique needs with the collaboration and support of the broader ten-campus police network.
We strive to be effective crisis leaders and model best practices in all areas of policing including response to civil disobedience and mass emergencies. To this end, the Council of Police Chiefs works on system-wide policy and resource improvements to enhance consistency of approach as we address the unique public safety challenges faced by each campus. These improvements include ongoing training of the UC Police Special Response Team (SRT) comprised of officers and command staff from all ten police departments. The SRT is available to respond to highly specialized major events and emergency situations.
UCPD is committed to operational excellence and the ten Police Chiefs regularly collaborate to share best practice programs and experiences and to support each campus through mutual-aid assistance, when needed, to preserve the peace and safety of the campus community.
The primary responsibility of every one of our members is to assist the University in establishing a safe and peaceful environment in order that the University’s mission of education, research, public service and patient care can take place in an open and welcoming environment. We also recognize that all members of the campus community share in the responsibility of maintaining our safe environment.
Our ten campus websites provide relevant and practical information to help you prevent and better respond in the event of a crime or public safety emergency. Please find the link to each UCPD website below:
